Now, last year I showed you how I painted this window with my house numbers.
I absolutely love it, but if you look close, you’ll see where the glass has mysteriously cracked. I had to come up with an alternative plan, but I didn’t want to have to go back to the “normal” numbers on the siding.
These old cabinet doors have been sitting in my basement for centuries – at least that’s how dusty they were.
After I scrubbed them clean, this is what I had:
1 empty frame, 1 frame with broken glass, and 1 frame with its glass whole and intact.
I did not want to use the one that was whole and unbroken, so I decided to find a way to use the one empty frame.
First, I spray painted it black and followed that with a coat of polyurethane to protect it.
We had some leftover paneling from when we had to re-do our bathtub surround a few years back, and The Man cut me a piece to fit inside the frame.
I turned the paneling around so the waterproof side was on the outside and then I decoupaged scrapbook paper all over the other side. After I printed up some huge numbers on my computer, in a funky font, I cut those out and decoupaged them over the scrapbook paper. On top of all that, I put a coat of Modge Podge, followed by 2 coats of polyurethane.
This is the backside where you can see the paneling.
To make sure it is completely sealed and weather-proof, I put it all together in the frame and then used clear caulk to seal it so no moisture can get inside.
Why am I using my finger to spread the caulk?
Well, it’s because I couldn’t find the caulk gun. It was nowhere to be found. And I had to do this today, could.not.wait for The Man to come home and help me. So, instead, I used the handle of a hammer to try and push the caulk up and out. This is the result -
Can't wait to explain this to The Man.
But, I did use clear caulk, so it won’t show too badly.
Before my caulk fiasco, I drilled two holes in the cabinet frame for the screws to go through.
If you don’t know how to use a drill – learn. It will be the best thing you’ll ever do. Well, maybe not the best, but one of the best, at least.
I promise.
I screwed it into the siding and that was it. TaDa!
And please, no body mention that the 0 is not centered. I did my best, but it still got off-center, and by the time I had it glued down, it was too late. I almost tore it all apart and started over, but The Man forbade me. (I actually asked him to forbid me to do it, otherwise I'd drive myself crazy obsessing over it) He says it looks "artsy". And so off-centered it remains.
